Adult Foster Care

Loretta's Foster Care

- 2 Houses Since 1992 - Loretta Raithel Founder - Deb & Rick Brose Partners -

Adult foster care was created to provide assistance to senior and disabled adults who can no longer live safely on their own but don't need daily nursing supervision. Foster homes provide a home-like atmosphere for their guests and tend to be more family oriented than large assisted living or residential care facilities.

Residents rights are respected, and the few common sense rules that are in place are always posted.

When people choose adult foster care, it often relieves a great burden for both residents and their families. There can be resentment on both sides. Parents may resent being told what they should or shouldn't do by someone whose diapers they used to change. Adult children may be struggling to do what's right for their aging parents and perhaps trying to juggle work and their own children. Foster caregivers can take care of the everyday personal needs of the residents, from bathing and dressing to medication management and doctor's visits; so sons and daughters can go back to being sons and daughters and enjoying their times with mom and dad.

As with any other service-type experience, homes should be investigated carefully before a loved one is placed. Check with the local state office for Seniors and Peoples with Disabilities, ask for and check references from the home owners, and check with area home health and hospice agencies. Always visit the home! Each adult foster care home has a unique style that can vary a lot from caregiver to caregiver. Some cater to ladies or gentlemen only; others have mixed populations. Some homes have live-in pets that help care for the residents. Each home is licensed for the level of care that is provided, from basic, uncomplicated care for fairly independent people (Level 1) up to nursing-home level care for those who need complex medical care (Level 3). Most homes are level 2 and have a mixed population. Since adult foster homes are only allowed to have a maximum of five residents, the caregiver/residents ratio is much better than that in any other residential type of care. Homes in Oregon are licensed and inspected by the state and must follow an extensive set of rules set up by the Oregon Legislature.

We at Loretta's Foster Care have been in business as a partnership for 15 years. Loretta, the "senior partner" has been doing care since 1988, and Debbie and Rick since 1992. We believe in the healing power of laughter and love, and we have enjoyed becoming a part of the lives of our residents and their families. We have worked closely with local home health and hospice agencies over the years, believing that once a person becomes a part of our "family", they should be allowed to stay with us as long as they wish. Changing health conditions are noted and dealt with quickly. We feel that at the end of life, a person should be able to stay home and be cared for by those who know and care about them rather than be transferred to an institution. With the help of hospice and home health we have been able to provide that care! We have two homes in Bend.
