Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy (AOBT)

Ashiatsu is an ancient form of bodywork used by Buddhist monks. It has always been associated with traditional Shiatsu with underlining dynamics in the study of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Although the roots of Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy™ (AOBT) are definitely Asian, this technique blends a combination of India Keralite massage, South Pacific barefoot massage and traditional barefoot Shiatsu with western style Swedish strokes. Ultimately, the blended form has taken the ancient barefoot massage techniques and adapted them for a flowing, but deep compression massage that is very relaxing.

AOBT uses natural gravitational force combined with smooth compression strokes to bring about a structural change in chronic soft tissue damage. Proper application provides a gliding, yet consistent broad pressure for deep relaxation and stimulation of the lymphatic system. The bars overhead are simply used for balance and to assist the therapist in modifying pressure by backing off his/her body weight, as appropriate.

AOBT has remarkable effects with regard to clients who suffer from chronic low back pain as well as for anyone desiring deep, therapeutic massage work without the pain sometimes associated with delivery of deep pressure (especially when therapists use thumbs and elbows!)

AOBT has been featured in many massage journals, USA Today, and on numerous television shows across the country.

Actress Ashley Judd, governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, athlete Sugar Ray Leonard, musicians David Byrne and Peter Gabriel, to name a few, are devoted fans of this style.

To date, there are only 1400 certified practitioners worldwide, but the news is spreading quickly!

*While I am the only certified AOBT therapist in central Oregon, there are currently 8 others in the state.
