Trails and Camps in The Deschutes National Forest

Chief Paulina Horse Camp
Bend-Fort Rock Ranger District, 541-388-5674.
Directions:Take highway 97 south out of Bend 22 miles; follow signs to Paulina Lake Recreation Area.
Facilities:14 camp sites, corrals, restroom, water for horses. Trails to Newberry Crater, Paulina Peak, and Peter Skene Ogdon Trail. The elevation is 6330 feet, and should be free of snow July through October. Concessionaire - Northwest Land Management, call 1-800-280-CAMP for reservations. Map

Cultus Corral
Bend-Fort Rock Ranger District, 541-388-5674.
Directions: Located 40 miles south of Bend just off Highway 46 on Road 4630 by Cultus Lake.
From Bend take the Cascade Lakes Highway. About 4 miles south of Deschutes ridge, turn right onto Road #4630. Cultus Corral is about one mile on your left with a small entrance road. If you have driven on Road #4630 to the paved Road #4635, you have past it.
From Highway 58 take the 61 cutoff to the left where you will pass Davis Lake and Crane Prairie. Take the Cultus Lake Resort turnoff Road #4635 to the left for about 1 1/2 miles. Turn right onto Road #4630 (gravel). Cultus Corral will be about one mile to your right.
Facilities: Will camp up to 200 people; 30 horses. 11 sites each with a 4 horse corral, 3 toilets, parking. fire rings, community shelters. A pump has been installed by Oregon Equestrian Trails in cooperation with Bend Ranger District, USFS.
No fee or reservations. Map

Graham Corral
Sisters Ranger District, 541-549-2111.
Directions: 6 miles northwest of Sisters, Oregon near Indian Ford. 11 miles from Sisters. Turn west off of Hwy 20 at the Cold Springs Cutoff (Rd. 1012). Travel one mile and turn right (north) on Rd. 330. Make a left turn onto Rd. 340 in approximately a mile. This road leads to the camp.
Facilities: 13 two-family campsites, (some sites with individual box stalls), one large corral divided into four sections (please tie horses to fence posts inside the corral), unloading ramp, 1 double-vault toilet. Piped livestock water, two potable water hydrants. The Metolius-Windigo Trail is the only trail accessable near the camp. Many small forest roads provide additional riding options. Special note: This camp is a historical site used in the late 1800's and early 1900's as a livestock counting and gathering corral for the Cache Mountains and Metolius River grazing allotments. Quinn Meadow Horse Camp

Directions: Take Highway 46 (Cascade Lakes Highway) 29 miles west of Bend (past Inn of the Seventh Mountain and Mt. Bachelor) between Sparks Lake and Elk Lake (sign on right-hand side).
Facilities:25 camp sites with reservations required, tie stalls and corrals, 2 restrooms, drinking water, and community shelter with $6.00 fee.
Many lakes and streams. too many trails to list; can also be reached from Pacific Crest Trail. Call 1-800-280-camp for reservations. Map

Sheep Springs

Directions: 5 miles northwest of Camp Sherman. Turn north off of Hwy 20 onto the Jack Lake Rd.(Rd.12). Proceed nearly 7 miles to the intersection of Rd.1260. Turn west (to the left) on Rd.1260. Within a mile, turn right on Rd. 200 which leads to the camp.
Facilities: 11 two-family campsites with tables and fire pits, 44 box stalls (four per site), 2 vault toilets, unloading ramp. Potable water is from hand pump and there is creek water for livestock. The Metolius-Windigo Trail provides riding opportunity to the south. Several trails in the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness Area are easily accessed (wilderness permits required). Special note: Reservations are requested at this horse camp from mid April through October. Due to high occupancy, reservations are generally necessary for summer weekends and holidays. Sisters Cow Camp

Directions: 3 miles west of Sisters. Turn south off of Hwy 242 one mile and a half west of Sisters onto Rd.15. Travel approximately 2 miles to a small dirt Rd. 100. This road dead ends at the camp.
Facilities: Corral with three separate sections (please tie horses to posts in the corral), 4 tables, 4 fire pits, loading chutes, vault toilets, and dispersed campsites. Piped spring water for livestock. No potable water. The Metolius-Windigo Trail leads both north and south from this site. Other riding opportunities are available on forest roads. Special note: This site was established in the 1920's and the original hay shed is still standing. There is no fee and no reservations. Contact Hoodoo Ski Area at (541) 822-3799 details. Map

Squaw Creek Crossing

Trail camp only and is located four miles south of Sisters on the Metolius-Windigo Trail which is the only access. No facilities at the present time. Map

Swamp Wells

Directions:12 miles south-east of Bend. From Bend, travel 4 miles south on Hwy. 97, turn east onto China Hat Road (Rd.18) for 5.4 miles, leave pavement and turn south onto Rd. 1810 for 5.8 miles, and then turn east for 3 miles on Rd. 1816 (warning: there is one steep pitch about 1 mile from camp).
Facilities: 6 trailer / tent sites with fire pits and tables. No corrals or toilets at this time but should be constructed soon. Water for stock is available from a wildlife guzzler located just south-east from loading ramp. There is no potable water. No vehicles are allowed in the meadow. The main Swamp Wells Trail that runs from just outside of Bend 36 miles to Paulina Lake in the Newberry National Monument runs through camp. Two parallel trails meet at camp as well for a total of almost 50 miles of trails. All of them are combinations of single track trail and two track jeep roads. Note: This whole area is recovering from a pine-beetle infestation during the mid-eighties and is a little rough on the eyes but never crowded. OET is in the process of rebuilding this horse camp and trail system.

Three Creek Meadow Horse Camp

Directions: 18 miles south of Sisters. Turn south in Sisters on Elm St. Proceed 18 miles on Elm which evenually becomes forest Rd.16.
Facilities: 32 horse stalls, 9 campsites, 11 tables, 2 vault toilets. Stream water is available for livestock (please help protect the stream by carrying water to the stock). No potable water. The area is usually snow free July through October. The Metolius-Windigo Trail passes through the site. Numerous trails which access the Three Sisters Wilderness Area are available (wilderness permits required). Horses, vehicles and camping not allowed in the meadow. Whispering Pines

Directions: 11 miles west of Sisters. Travel west from Sisters on Hwy 242 for 6 miles. Turn south on Rd.1018 and proceed approximately four miles to the camp.
Facilities: 36 box stalls, 9 campsites with tables and fire pits, vault toilets, long parking spurs, group fire ring/picnic area. Stream water for livestock. No potable water. The camp has good access to trails in the Three Sisters Wilderness Area (wilderness permits required). Contact Hoodoo Ski Area at (541) 822-3799 for reservation details. Map

Whitefish Horse Camp

Directions:Take Highway I-5 to Goshen then Highway 58 (Willamette Pass) to Oakridge. Continue on to Crescent lake Junction; turn right; go about six miles to camp. Watch for signs on the right about 400 feet past Tranquil Bay.
Facilities:19 box stalls, restrooms and horse water. NO POTABLE WATER. Camp is on Pacific Crest Trail and there are many trails out of camp. Horses should be shod. Trails should be free of snow June through October. Bring manure bags to keep the camp clean.
