Founded in 1994, the Higher Co-housing Ground Community was designed and built by Steve Josse and his partners, John and Nancy Baker, and Dietland Johnson. Higher Ground is an Earth friendly neighborhood adapted to the natural terrain of the area.
Higher Ground is an affordable planned community of 38 homes in Bend, Oregon. The homes are approximately 1100 to 2400 sq. ft., and are built on privately owned lots. Approximately 3.7 acres are owned and shared as common ground. Each member household owns its own living unit, plus a share in the commonly owned land and common house.
The community is environmentally friendly, relying on sound practices of development and building. Some units are built with passive and active solar energy as a partial source of heat, including solar water systems. Energy efficient building materials such as straw bales, structural insulated panels, and recycled Styrofoam blocks have all been used to build homes in Higher Ground. The interior and exterior of some of the homes use low toxic and recycled materials.
