Research and Analysis

There is an excellent selection of web sites maintained by non-partisan, independent and progressive organizations that are reliable resources for political, economic, social and other information:

Oregon:

The Oregon Center for Public Policy provides an excellent service with its reports on economics and taxation as they affect Oregon.

National:

The Brookings Institution, "one of Washington's oldest think tanks, is an independent, nonpartisan organization devoted to research, analysis, and public education with an emphasis on economics, foreign policy, governance, and metropolitan policy."

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities "is one of the nation’s premier policy organizations working at the federal and state levels on fiscal policy and public programs that affect low- and moderate-income families and individuals."

Families and Work Institute (FWI) is a nonprofit center for research that provides data to inform decision-making on the changing workforce, changing family and changing community. Founded in 1989, FWI's research typically takes on emerging issues before they crest. Our work often changes the language of debates to move the discussion forward.

The Wisconsin Advertising Project (WiscAds) (University of Wisconsin at Madison) has undertakes research initiatives to document how candidates, political parties and special interest groups communicate with voters.

International in Scope:

The Chicago Council on Foreign Relations (CCFR) is one of the largest independent, non-profit international affairs organizations in the United States, serving over 7,000 members and the community through diversified programming. The Council provides members, specialized groups and the general public with a forum for the consideration of significant international issues and their bearing on American foreign policy.

The Program on International Policy Attitudes (PIPA) carries out research on public opinion on foreign policy and international issues by conducting nationwide polls, focus groups and comprehensive reviews of polling conducted by other organizations.  PIPA is a joint program of the Center on Policy Attitudes (COPA) and the Center for International and Security Studies at Maryland (CISSM), School of Public Affairs, University of Maryland.

The Power and Interest News Report (PINR) is an analysis-based publication that seeks to, as objectively as possible, provide insight into various conflicts, regions and points of interest around the globe. PINR approaches a subject based upon the powers and interests involved, leaving the moral judgments to the reader.

Foreign Policy in Focus is an excellent site for reports on matters related to foreign policy.  This site offers weekly e-mails concerning topical matters.

Worldviews is a joint Chicago Council on Foreign Relations (CCFR) and German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) project aimed at investigating the attitudes of the American and European public on a range of foreign policy issues.

This page is under construction and will be added to in the near future.  See also the international pages in the Links section.
