Prior to and for a short period after the outbreak of war on Iraq, proponents and opponents shared a common practice. Both sides said they supported the troops. Clearly, "Support the troops" had different meanings to the opposing parties. Among other related topics, this section will look at what support meant to some people and question what it meant to others in other circumstances. Links to military-related sites: The Department of Defense is the primary site for all military organizations. It also provides the latest casualty reports from Iraq and Afghanistan. Gold Star Families for Peace comprises "families of soldiers who have died as a result of war (primarily, but not limited to the invasion/occupation of Iraq) are organizing to be a positive force in our world to bring our country’s sons and daughters home from Iraq, to minimize the “human cost” of this war, and to prevent other families from the pain we are feeling as the result of our losses." Soldiers for the Truth, led by the legendary Colonel Hackworth, is an essential site for getting at the truth of some issues that are frequently distorted by official and other sources. David Hackworth (Col., US Army, Ret.) is the well-known, decorated veteran and outspoken critic of many aspects of the US military, and his web site does just that.
