On Giving UN Inspectors More Time

On behalf of the Bush Administration, Dick Cheney told Tim Russert on "Meet The Press" on Sunday, March 16, 2003, that we can't give the UN inspectors another 30 days because this would give Saddam Hussein more time to build up his forces and put him in a position to attack our forces.

Can anyone possibly take seriously a suggestion that Saddam Hussein could improve his severely limited military position in 30 days to the point where he would pose a serious threat to the largest assembly of military power the world has ever seen and is now on Iraq's borders?

Presumably, Cheney believed his audience would be sufficiently gullible to accept this argument.

Russert did not call Cheney on this.  There is always a limit to how tough Russert will get with his guests.
