Informed Comment by Juan Cole:  Juan Cole is Professor of History at the University of Michigan.  His views on Iraq and other parts of the Middle East are highly respected.

Bitter Lemons International "is an internet forum for an array of world perspectives on the Middle East and its specific concerns. Its audience is the interested public and policymakers."

The Asia Times is an excellent on-line site for some of the most authoritative and informed commentaries and opinion related to the countries that comprise the continent and the Middle East.

The Arab Net, Al Jazeera and Al Bawaba web sites are sources of news and information about countries with Arab and Muslim populations in the Middle East and North Africa.  Westerners should recognize that the press in the Middle East should be regarded with skepticism and much of it is controlled by regional rulers.

Islam Online has news related to areas of the world with Muslim populations.  The site also provides introductory information on Islam.

Khalifah.com is an Arab web site providing Middle Eastern viewpoints.  It also has a large collection of related articles from Western and other sources.

The Middle East Research and Information Project (MERIP) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization based in Washington, DC. A completely independent organization, it has no links to any religious, educational or political organizations in the US or elsewhere.  MERIP publishes the Middle East Report

Robert Fisk is a featured columnist for The Independent (UK) and one of the world's most respected journalists.  His work focuses mainly on the Middle East.

Forward is a Jewish weekly published in New York that offers an independent voice on Middle East and other issues.

The Daily Star is published in Lebanon and provides coverage of regional news along with commentaries by authorities on the Middle East.

Amnesty International "is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights.

"AI’s vision is of a world in which every person enjoys all of the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights standards."

The Al-Hewar Center "was established by Al-Hewar Magazine in December 1994 in metropolitan Washington, D.C., as an independent forum for dialogue among the various members of the Arab community with the goals of finding common ground within the community as well as bringing about greater mutual understanding between the Arab community and American society at large. The Center is designed to facilitate the participation of a wide and diverse audience, and membership is open to all who are interested."

Human Rights Watch is dedicated to protecting the human rights of people around the world.

The Arab American Institute is "is a non-profit organization committed to the civic and political empowerment of Americans of Arab descent."  The web site is a good source of information related to current events from an Arab-American perspective.

The Saban Center for Middle East Policy is part of the Brookings Institution
