International Media

The term "international" in this case includes media outside the United States and those within the U.S. that focus on international issues. Many of these sources provide more honest assessments of conditions around the world than does our national mainstream media.

International:

Founded in 1970 by Samuel Huntington and Warren Demian Manshel, and now published by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, D.C., FOREIGN POLICY is the premier, award-winning magazine of global politics, economics, and ideas. Our mission is to explain how the world works—in particular, how the process of global integration is reshaping nations, institutions, cultures, and, more fundamentally, our daily lives.

The Free World Web offers an opportunity for readers of Timothy Garton Ash's book Free World and his fortnightly columns, or anyone else who wishes to join in, to exchange ideas about how we can work towards a free world. Themes will change in response to your suggestions.  The site has a selection of links to other excellent web sites.

The Independent Media Center:  "Indymedia is a collective of independent media organizations and hundreds of journalists offering grassroots, non-corporate coverage. Indymedia is a democratic media outlet for the creation of radical, accurate, and passionate tellings of truth."

Security Scholars for Sensible Foreign Policy "is a small group of academics who are concerned about American national security, and about the quality of the American debate on national security and foreign policy topics. We take no money from any sources outside of the scholars who have signed the letter, and their families."

Since joining New School University in 1991, the World Policy Institute has sought to adapt its traditional mission of policy research and advocacy on critical world problems to the New School's tradition of creative adult education.

Europe:

The Independent and The Guardian are published in London with reasonably centrist viewpoints.

The Sunday Herald and The Scotsman are published in Scotland and have been noted for several investigative reports.

The BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) was once regarded with great respect for its independence and honesty.  It has taken some knocks in this regard lately but is still capable of providing a range of news that few others can equal.

Reuters UK is a distinguished news gathering with a long history of world-wide coverage.

Le Monde (French only) is centrist and one of Europe's most respected newspapers.

Le Figaro (French only) is another of Europe's most respected newspapers.

Other French papers include:  Libération, Les Echos, and L'Équipe

Die Zeit (German only) also centrist and highly respected.

ABC Spain (Spanish only) leans to the right.

Middle East:

The Institute for War and Peace publishes on-line reports from Middle East and Central Asia newspapers.

The Daily Star in Lebanon is a leading voice of reform in the Arab world, a cause that the Bush administration has sought to advance.

Haaretz is usually a fair and impartial reporter of news in Israel and the Palestine Territories.  The Jerusalem Post leans towards the right in its politics.

Asia:

The Asia Times is one of the best resources for commentary on political matters in Asia and the Middle East.

The Manila Bulletin On Line is a leading newspaper in the Philippines.

Oceania and South Pacific:

The Sydney Morning Herald is one of Australia's leading papers.

The New Zealand Herald is a major source of news in New Zealand that carries important international reports.

Africa:

The Monitor is Uganda's major newspaper.

South Africa's leading newspaper is the Mail and Guardian .

Latin America:

El Salvador's daily El Diario de Hoy (Spanish only) is a conservative newspaper.

Proceso (Spanish only) is a Mexican newsweekly that is occasionally critical of Bush policies.
