The media are an important part of democracy, but they can also be used to destroy a democratic society. This latter scenario should be a matter of great concern to people concerned with retaining what is left of the democratic process, especially when we see the concentration of media in ever fewer corporations. To begin we suggest that you consider the Code of Ethics of the Associated Press Managing Editors and the the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics to evaluate how well your newspapers adhere to this code. Another basic site for media understanding is The Project for Excellence in Journalism which "is an initiative by journalists to clarify and raise the standards of American journalism. The project pursues the aim of clarifying standards by bringing journalists together to decide for themselves what their purpose and aims are." The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPA) is an independent non-profit organization dedicated to protecting press freedom world-wide.
