Founded in 1970 by Samuel Huntington and Warren Demian Manshel, and now published by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, D.C., FOREIGN POLICY is the premier, award-winning magazine of global politics, economics, and ideas. Our mission is to explain how the world works—in particular, how the process of global integration is reshaping nations, institutions, cultures, and, more fundamentally, our daily lives. For more than 70 years, the Population Reference Bureau has been informing people about the population dimensions of important social, economic, and political issues. Our mission is to be the leader in providing timely and objective information on U.S. and international population trends and their implications. Worldwatch Institute "offers a unique blend of interdisciplinary research, global focus, and accessible writing that has made it a leading source of information on the interactions among key environmental, social, and economic trends." The Aspen Institute's Global Interdependence Initiative "was launched in early 1999 and is conceived as a ten-year effort to better inform, and more effectively motivate, American public support for forms of U.S. international engagement that are appropriate to an interdependent world. Its founding partners and collaborating agencies believe that global interdependence requires an approach to international engagement that better balances military, economic, and environmental and humanitarian concerns and is more consistent with key American values such as fairness, democratic participation and generosity. Such an approach would serve both the majority of humanity and long-term American interests." The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing cooperation between nations and promoting active international engagement by the United States. Founded in 1910, its work is nonpartisan and dedicated to achieving practical results. Proliferation News and Resources is part of the CEIP web site and an excellent resource for information about the proliferation of weapons. The Carnegie Council on Ethics and International Affairs holds educational programs, sponsors original research, and generates new resources on human rights, armed conflict, reconciliation, global justice, the environment, and other areas of international affairs that raise important ethical questions. Diplomats and Military Commanders for Change are an unprecedented bipartisan coalition of 27 career chiefs of mission and retired four-star military leaders who have launched a nationwide campaign to press for the need for change in U.S. foreign and defense policy because they are deeply concerned by the damage the Bush Administration has caused to our national and international interests. Foreign Policy in Focus bills itself as a think tank without walls and deals with human rights and other progressive issues. Note also its link to the Interhemispheric Resources Center. Freedom House is "a non-profit, nonpartisan organization, is a clear voice for democracy and freedom around the world. Through a vast array of international programs and publications, Freedom House is working to advance the remarkable worldwide expansion of political and economic freedom." Grassroots.org is a 501c3 that is looking to change the world slowly but surely via the Internet at local, national, and international levels. We serve other non-profits and information consumers worldwide and provide free Internet business services to charities, including full-featured web hosting and email services. This site has links to several organizations that are active in progressive issues. The Global Aware Cooperative is "a cooperative of writers, academics, journalists and individuals committed to responsible information about issues that matter to everyone: our global environment and our collective social development. We seek to bear witness to issues and events around the world to promote an alternative process of globalization; the globalization of mutual understanding through awareness." GlobalAware Canada and Global Fair Trade are companion Canadian sites. Global Envision is sponsored by Mercy Corps to use the global free market system as a starting point for reducing world poverty. Global Envision believes in providing the poor with opportunities to improve their own lives and that this will be a catalyst fora more fair, hopeful and stable future. Global Vision also supports economic development and responsible free markets as the most reliable and sustainable strategies for global poverty alleviation. The Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) is the nation’s oldest multi-issue progressive think tank. Since 1963, IPS has worked with social movements to forge viable and sustainable policies to promote democracy, justice, human rights, and diversity. The Institute for Science and International Security "is a non-profit, non-partisan institution dedicated to informing the public about science and policy issues affecting international security. Its efforts focus on stopping the spread of nuclear weapons, bringing about greater transparency of nuclear activities worldwide, and achieving deep reductions in nuclear arsenals. ISIS's projects integrate technical, scientific, and policy research in order to build a sound foundation for a wide variety of efforts to reduce the threat posed by nuclear weapons to U.S. and international security." The Interhemispheric Resource Center (IRC) is working to make the U.S. a more responsible member of the global community by promoting progressive strategic dialogues that lead to new citizen-based agendas. The IRC sponsors these web sites: Americas Program - a new world of ideas and analysis; Foreign Policy in Focus - a think tank without walls; Global Affairs - making the U.S. a more responsible global leader and global partner; The Project Against the Present Danger - in defense of international law and cooperation; Right Web - exposing the architecture of power that's changing our world; and Southwest Global - Local Links - making the connections that make democracy work. The International Crisis Group "is an independent, non-profit, multinational organisation, with over 100 staff members on five continents, working through field-based analysis and high-level advocacy to prevent and resolve deadly conflict." The Monterey Institute of International Studies maintains the Center for Non-Proliferation Studies which "strives to combat the spread of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) by training the next generation of nonproliferation specialists and disseminating timely information and analysis." The Open Society Institute "is a private operating and grantmaking foundation that develops and implements a range of programs in civil society, education, media, public health, and human and women's rights, as well as social, legal, and economic reform. Established in 1993 by investor and philanthropist George Soros and based in New York City, OSI is at the center of an informal network of foundations and organizations active in more than 50 countries worldwide." The Center for Economic and Social Rights (CESR) "was established in 1993 to promote social justice through human rights. In a world where poverty and inequality deprive entire communities of dignity and even life itself, CESR promotes the universal right of every human being to housing, education, health and a healthy environment, food, work, and social security." The Royal Institute of International Affairs is a highly respected, London-based center for the study of international affairs. The World Today and International Affairs are published by the Institute and on-line versions can be viewed through the home page for the web site. The Power and Interest News Report (PINR) is a global organization that provides analyses of conflicts and other international events. We are currently independently funded giving us the freedom to analyze objectively. PINR seeks to provide insight into various conflicts, regions and points of interest around the globe. We approach a subject based upon the powers and interests involved, leaving the moral judgments to the reader. PINR seeks to inform rather than persuade. Maquila Solidarity "is a Canadian network promoting solidarity with groups in Mexico, Central America, and Asia organizing in maquiladora factories and export processing zones to improve conditions and win a living wage. In a global economy it is essential that groups in the North and South work together for employment with dignity, fair wages and working conditions, and healthy workplaces and communities." The Middle East Research and Information Project was established 31 years ago. It provides news and perspectives about the Middle East not available from mainstream news sources. The magazine has developed a reputation for independent analysis of events and developments in the Middle East. The nonprofit Resource Center of the Americas (of which AMERICAS.ORG is a program) is devoted to the notion that everyone, everywhere is entitled to the same fundamental human rights. Our starting point for promoting these rights is learning and teaching about the peoples and countries of the Americas—their history, culture and politics. We focus especially on the global economy, a system in which a minority flourishes while millions of people lack adequate food, shelter and employment. Security Scholars for a Sensible Foreign Policy is a small group of academics who are concerned about American national security, and about the quality of the American debate on national security and foreign policy topics. As educators, we are especially concerned that while most experts consider the war in Iraq to have been a mistake that harms the fight against terrorism, the American public is unaware of the many Bush Administration blunders that are harming American security. Women Waging Peace has, as its goal, to change the public policy paradigm to fully integrate women throughout formal and informal peace processes to prevent violent conflict, stop war, and sustain peace in fragile regions. Cold Type has collections of (mostly political) writings and excerpts from books from a variety of writers with international status. International Commission on Radiological Protection, "ICRP, is an independent Registered Charity, established to advance for the public benefit the science of radiological protection, in particular by providing recommendations and guidance on all aspects of protection against ionising radiation." The Quixote Center "is a faith-based, social justice center working with people who have few resources for their struggles. We strive to make our world, our nation, and our church more just, peaceful and equitable in their policies and practices." U.S. Committee on Refugees defends the rights of all uprooted people regardless of their nationality, race, religion, ideology, or social group. Since joining New School University in 1991, the World Policy Institute has sought to adapt its traditional mission of policy research and advocacy on critical world problems to the New School's tradition of creative adult education. It has done so at a time when the traditional subject of international diplomacy and world politics itself is being transformed by dramatic world changes from the end of the Cold War to the increasing blurring of the line between domestic and international concerns. Accordingly, the Institute has both redefined its agenda and broadened its mission.
