Prisons

Overall, the record of the American justice system and prisons is nothing to be proud of and corporations in the prison business have made that record worse. To find more deplorable conditions requires looking at Third World countries.

Despite this Oregon Tax Research and Cascade Policy Institute have advocated that the Oregon Youth Authority contract with private providers for provision of youth correctional services.

The August 2003 issue of Harper’s Magazine published an article on privatized health care in prisons (by Correctional Medical Services) that should give great concern to anyone concerned with human rights.  This article and others like it offered information that the Oregon Tax Research and Cascade Policy Institute probably chose to omit or were indifferent to.

Anyone interested in this topic and human rights should read the following articles:

CCA, the Sequel by Eric Bates (The Nation - May 20, 1999) on how Corrections Corporation of America manages it contracted prisons.

Check out the list of links on http://www.cyberspace-inmates.com/cms.htm related to privatized medical services in prisons.

A case could be made that some people providing privatized prison services are worse than those that are incarcerated.
