The School of the Americas/WHISC draws people from around the nation each year to a vigil and non-violent civil resistance action. These protests bring attention to the activities of the training camp, operated by the US Army, which has long been a target of human rights activists because of the human rights abuses associated with the school's graduates. Alpírez has attended the School of the Americas on two occasions. Letter to Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. A comment in this letter dealing with human rights abuses in Latin America states: At least seven officers mentioned in the attached report are School of the Americas graduates. Colombia's Killer Networks includes this comment: In addition, Colombian officers linked to human rights violations have received U.S. training, including CIA-sponsored training in Panama and at the School of the Americas, and have even served at the School of the Americas and the Inter-American Defense College in Washington, D.C. as instructors.
