Water Issues

Residents of Central Oregon should recall the battle waged to Stop Cogentrix, a power plant that would have consumed as much as 8 million gallons of precious water each day.  Members of the business community and their supporters helped to promote construction of this Cogentrix plant.  Now, just a few months after Cogentrix retreated, we are reading many articles that express a concern about our water supply.  We all owe a great debt to the leadership of Mary Zemke, now a Jefferson County commissioner, and her supporters for their efforts to defeat Cogentrix.

There are several compelling articles related to water issues in The Nation's on-line archives.  We recommend that you visit this web site and search for "water" to be made aware of how this resource that is so vital to humanity is threatened in so many ways.

Waterkeeper Alliance connects and supports local Waterkeeper programs to provide a voice for waterways and their communities worldwide.
