Voting

The links below are posted to assist in voter education.

Oregon Votes is a very good official resource for essential information about voting.

The Alliance for Democracy "is a new progressive populist movement --- not a political party --- setting forth to end corporate domination, to establish true political democracy and to build a just society with a sustainable, equitable economy."

Right to Vote seeks to broaden national public discussion of disfranchisement through media and communications, impact litigation and scholarship. RTV has also launched, and provides technical assistance to, state-based campaigns in five target states — Alabama, Florida, Maryland, New York and Texas — where the Campaign is using one or more of these strategies — clemency assistance, voter registration, public education, legislative advocacy and litigation.

Black Box Voting and the National Ballot Integrity Project Task Force are two of the best electronic-voting watchdog sites.

CalTech-MIT/Voting Technology Project "is dedicated to fair elections that promote participation and inclusive representation."

The Center for Voting and Democracy

Count Every Vote and Voters Unite are additional activist sites to protect voting integrity.

Election Protection is a web site maintained by People for the American Way for "protecting voters rights in 2004 and beyond."

Election Incident Reporting System

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is a nonprofit group of passionate people — lawyers, technologists, volunteers, and visionaries — working to protect your digital rights.

These organizations are also involved in voting issues:  National Voting Rights Institute, People for the American Way Foundation, Common Cause, Fannie Lou Hamer Project, Invisible Ballots

Articles on Electronic Voting:

Electronic voting without a paper trail threatens our democracy.  Check these articles:

Hacking the Vote: A Real and Present Danger is a press release on Common Dreams from the Institute for Public Accuracy explaining how Black Box Voting and the National Ballot Integrity Project Task Force announced Wednesday that they "have been able to hack into both Diebold's and Sequoia Voting Systems' voting machines."

Tallying the Woes of Electronic Balloting by Chris Gaither of the Los Angeles Times cites alarming evidence of problems with electronic voting machines that don't provide a paper trail.

From David Corn at The Nation:  At a time when there is much controversy over electronic  voting and some election experts are raising concerns about  the integrity of such voting, should the leading manufacturers  of electronic voting machines be wining and dining state and  local officials responsible for conducting elections? Well,  they are. [...more]

The Secretary of State for Oregon has oversight responsibility for voting in Oregon and has related information on his web site.

The California Voter Foundation has an interesting article on voting technology that is germane to an honest election.

Project Vote Smart is a non-partisan program established to provide voters with factual information, free of bias, regarding voting records and positions on issues taken by candidates for election to national and state offices.

FactCheck is "a nonpartisan, nonprofit, "consumer advocate" for voters that aims to reduce the level of deception and confusion in U.S. politics. We monitor the factual accuracy of what is said by major U.S. political players in the form of TV ads, debates, speeches, interviews, and news releases. Our goal is to apply the best practices of both journalism and scholarship, and to increase public knowledge and understanding."

The Institute for Public Accuracy looks at major topics and analyses commentaries related to them.

The American Political Science Association, "founded in 1903, is the leading professional organization for the study of political science and serves more than 14,000 members in over 70 countries. With a range of programs and services for individuals, departments and institutions, APSA brings together political scientists from all fields of inquiry, regions, and occupational endeavors within and outside academe in order to expand awareness and understanding of politics."

VerifiedVoting.org "was initiated by David L. Dill early in July of 2003. The web site grew out of his concern for the integrity of the election process. The mission of the website is threefold:

  • To inform the public of the problems with relying on electronic voting machines to record and count our votes, without the backup of a voter-verifiable audit trail.
  • To point to reasonable solutions that are within reach.
  • To provide a list of actions voters can take, and to encourage them to act on their own behalf to ensure that all their votes count accurately in future elections."
