Environmental Groups in Central Oregon: The Deschutes Land Trust has as its mission: To protect special lands in the Deschutes Basin for present and future generations by working cooperatively with landowners and communities. The staff and Board of 3E Strategies believes the single most important step in safeguarding our regional and global environment is develop ways of living, traveling and doing business that increase economic and community well-being without degrading our natural environment. Therefore, our work focuses on three primary program areas: Building Green, Renewable Energy and Energy Policy and Sustainable Economic Development. Please read on to find out more about our organization and how you can get involved. Political Web Sites in Central Oregon: Randy Gordon is the Democratic candidate for Deschutes County Commissioner Judy Stiegler is the Democratic candidate for State Representative in Oregon's District 54 (Bend) John McColgan is the Democratic candidate for U.S. Representative for Oregon's 2nd District. For links to the web sites for statewide Democratic candidates visit the web site for the Deschutes County Democratic Party League of Women Voters of Deschutes County is a non-partisan organization that sponsors candidate forums and other activities in the county. This site has a section with links to many of the elected officials representing Deschutes County and its cities. Official: The official Deschutes County web site is a very good source of information concerning official county business. The County Clerk's web site provides essential information about voter registration and other matters related to county business. The web site for the League of Women Voters of Deschutes County has lists including many of the elected officials representing Deschutes County and its cities. Other: The following are some of the nonprofit organizations that do excellent work that enhances our area so much: The Central Oregon Community Action Agency Network (COCAAN) "is a private nonprofit organization established to serve and speak out for economically disadvantaged people in Central Oregon. Our mission is to break the cycle of poverty by helping remove the barriers that prevent people from achieving economic self-sufficiency." Central Oregon Resources for Independent Living (CORIL) "is a non-profit organization that assists people living with disabilities and gives them the opportunity to discover their true abilities. Providing services such as skills training, counseling and employment assistance, CORIL strives to help the people they serve live a more dignified lifestyle, while becoming productive citizens throughout the community." The Central Oregon Community Network is a web site with many links to area organizations. If you can't find what you are looking for in this list, there is a good chance you will find it through this link. A library system is essential to the betterment of every community, and the Deschutes Public Library System fulfills its role admirably. This web site also has a list of very useful links. The Central Oregon Battering and Rape Alliance (COBRA) works to assist victims of domestic and sexual and abuse and to help prevent future acts of family violence. Please note, anyone at risk of being abused should view COBRA's web site using a computer that is not accessible by a potential abuser who could trace the history of sites visited. The High Desert Museum is highly acclaimed with its exhibits explaining many aspects of the history of this area and its wildlife. The Humane Society of Central Oregon and The Humane Society of Redmond are two excellent organizations with dedicated people working to end suffering among animals and bringing happiness to families through their adoption services. The Sunriver Nature Center is a delightful place for people interested in viewing and learning more about regional wildlife. The Nature Center also has an observatory and offers astronomy programs in the summer. The Youth Choir of Central Oregon supports and encourages young people in the region to develop their singing talents. The Central Oregon Symphony gathers together many talented musicians living in this area. Their concerts are a delight for many residents and visitors throughout the year. Arts & Culture Council of Central Oregon Bend's Office of Neighborhoods Association The Deschutes Children's Foundation works to promote a community of services for children and families. The Central Oregon Partnership is a regional organization committed to inclusively collaborating with organizations, businesses and individuals to reduce poverty and its root causes in Central Oregon. Central Oregon Resources for Independent Living (CORIL) High Desert Forum sponsors visits of guest speakers discussing issues of international importance. Human Dignity Coalition The Bend Bugle is Bend's latest and welcome addition to print media for Central Oregon. There is a 300-word limit on letters. Commentary should be in the range of 600 to 900 words. Go to the Bugle's web site for information about submitting letters and commentary. The publishers of the Bend Bugle also maintain Bend's on-line news source - www.bend.com which also accepts communications from the public on a wide variety of topics. Correspondents to newspapers should include name, address and phone number with all submissions intended for publication. The Bend Bulletin is the major newspaper in Central Oregon. Letters to the editor can be sent by e-mail to the Bulletin at bulletin@bendbulletin.com. Editorial policy limits letters to 250 words with one letter every 30 days. In My View articles have a 750-word limit. The Source Weekly is Central Oregon's alternative newspaper. Send e-mail to info@tsweekly.com. The source will accept letters to the editor up to 900 words but usually prefers letters to be shorter. The Redmond Spokesman serves the Redmond and surrounding area. Send e-mail to spokesman@bendnet.com. Letters policy has a limit of 300 words for each letter for publication.
