Afghanistan

The web sites below are excellent sources of information related to Afghanistan:

The Asia Times is an excellent on-line site for some of the most authoritative and informed commentaries and opinion related to the countries that comprise the continent and the Middle East.  The Central Asia section has articles related to Afghanistan.  Use the search function for an extensive list of archived articles.

The Asia Times has a very interesting series by Nir Rosen:  Afghanistan:  Ballots and Bullets

Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan "is a volunteer solidarity group, established in 1996. Members from over ten chapters and affiliated groups are committed to raising awareness in Canada to the plight of Afghan women and their families."  This site also has a good list of related links.

The Crimes of War Project "is a collaboration of journalists, lawyers and scholars dedicated to raising public awareness of the laws of war and their application to situations of conflict. Our goal is to promote understanding of international humanitarian law among journalists, policymakers, and the general public, in the belief that a wider knowledge of the legal framework governing armed conflict will lead to greater pressure to prevent breaches of the law, and to punish those who commit them."

This recent article - Osama adds weight to Afghan resistance by Syed Saleem Shahzad, bureau chief in Pakistan for Asia Times Online - demonstrates that al-Queda remains an active threat in Afghanistan.

Women for Afghan Women (WAW) is an organization of Afghan and non-Afghan women from the New York area who are committed to ensuring the human rights of Afghan women.

WAW promotes the agency of local Afghan women through the creation of safe forums where Afghan women can network, develop programs to meet their specific needs, and participate in human rights advocacy in the international sphere.

Z Magazine has archives of articles on countries, including Afghanistan, and regions around the world on its web site.  These articles are written by recognized authorities and form an excellent resource for research.
